Routers and trimmers with a 1/4 inch collet are used to cut and shape wood, plastics and formica. One of the key differences between these power tools and a plunge router is that you will need to start the cut at the edge of the material. Whilst this may be seen as a disadvantage, typically routers and trimmers produce finer cuts than plunge routers.

• Some router / trimmers have a single speed whereas others have variable speed settings. Additionally, some router / trimmers come with tilting as well as fixed base, others just have a fixed base.
