A number of woodworking tools, whilst not the most popular such as those found in the saws & sanders section, are nonetheless key to a great number of woodworking applications. The majority of woodworking tools are mains powered, although a few tools are available cordless.
- Plunge routers are used for shaping, moulding & decorative work in wood, laminate, plastics & formica. They also make a clean cut in worktops. They differ to router / trirmmers in that the straight cut does not have to start from the edge of the material.
- Router / trimmers cut formica, plastics & wood. They differ to plunge routers in that the cut has to start from the edge of the material.
- Engravers can be used in a wide variety of materials including wood, plastic, ceramics, stone, metal, glass, leather etc.
- Planers are used to plane only wood.
- Thicknessers can be set to the desired thickness of the wood and as such can remove a greater depth & width of wood in a single pass compared to a planer. The wood is taken to the machine rather than the machine to the wood as in a planer.

- Biscuit jointers are used when joining two pieces of timber together using a biscuit, which is also known as a dowel.
- Chain mortisers, sometimes spelt morticer, are used in timber framing, boatbuilding and general carpentry for chisel mortices and slot cutting.
